I tried this as well, and apparently I don't even need to press the up key.
PoPOT doesn't mention that either: https://www.popot.org/documentation.php ... sPage4#149

By the way, why didn't you just climb down at 0:55 after the guard turned left at 0:52?
Does the prince start this level without sword? (Which mod is this?)

Although, even if he has a sword, the guard will knock the prince down to the bottom row (the prince loses 1 HP), and then the guard will follow the prince down.

Yes, you are right, you don't need to press up key, I don't know why I thought you need to press up key. It works without it.

No sword, that's why you can't climb down, the guard would immediately turn and kill the prince. It would be definitely possible to climb down if you had the sword.
David wrote: July 15th, 2020, 10:49 am Which mod is this?
No real mod, just a custom levelset to show how the trick can be used. Finding tricks which are not meaningful to use anywhere are useless in my opinion.

Right. But the prince doesn't have the sword... Can be used in first level of any mod.

I have found a trick, but I am confused. I think I have seen this before, but unsure if it's on PoPOT. Too many tricks to search through!

Self-explanatory. Just three words: Distance Is The Key. (Ok, those were four words! :P)

Nice trick!

And it can be used in level 8 of the original game, from room 5 to room 6. :D

(Speedrunners generally switch places with that guard. I don't think speedrunners will start using your trick. But it's still cool to skip several rooms.)

Jumping through the guard and then going down the normal way, is faster in my opinion. Someone has to calculate the frames to see which one is faster.

And yes, most tricks are only usable in new mods, because I always think, maybe Jordan had found many of such tricks and decided to avoid them, but again, only he knows.

It's really an interesting trick, and now I will have to check if it's possible to exploit in other mods!

Can you upload it to PoPOT? And I think we can '@' Jordan Mechner, showing him 151 (if you add this too) found tricks on PoPOT. I'm interested to see his reply! :P

Yes, it's fun that such interesting tricks can still get discovered.

I've added it.
Maybe it's cooler for Mechner if you'd create a YouTube video showing the trick in level 8 of his original game?
Up to you. If you can let me know what to '@' him.

I was thinking maybe we could have some kind of trick vote thing.
Where people can non-publicly submit their top 3 favorite tricks plus a description of why they like the tricks.
Their favorite trick would count for 3 points, their second 2, and last pick 1.
And then after the voting period, it's revealed which tricks the community likes best, who voted for what and why.
Or maybe everyone could submit their top 5, instead of 3.
To prevent people from using multiple email addresses to submit, maybe participation would require having posted about PoP somewhere (such as a post on this forum, or a simple tweet about the game). I dunno.
What do you think?

Well, just '@' him saying something like community found 151 bugs and tricks in original PoP created by @JordanMechner and some leading question, like has he ever thought that the classic game would lead to discovery of so many tricks, or something like that. You can of course, improvise some text, I can't think of anything better as of now.

Yeah, the voting thing - it's a good idea, and then we can post this on social media as well '@' ing Jordan!

That would require some code to be written, only if you have time. You are still working on more features in PoPOT.

Maybe we can do this on some special day, like when PoP was released, or on the day when the forum was launched, or something like that.

Or on the end of this year (lot of time to code or implement). This can also be done every year

Maybe you can finalise the idea, and then we can work on it :)

I was thinking of something more simple, like email your top 5 to info#popot.org before a certain date.
And then manually add up the points. Unless I'm overlooking something that would require code.
I'm off to bed now; will look into the '@' thing tomorrow.

Well, it can be done manually, but I thought maybe it would take more time to do this, manual process. There can be a lot of entries. There are still people on the forum, who are just readers, but they can participate.

Has anybody ever seen or tried this before? I have seen it for first time. Don't know about when it can be used. Maybe somewhere you don't have enough time to kill the guard and you have to hurry before the gate you just opened closes?

P.S: Well, I think it can be also used to drop a tile. I haven't tried it yet...

Norbert, you can upload it to PoPOT if you think it isn't too similar to Trick 1.

It's not similar to trick 1, but this is more level design than a trick, I think...?

Honestly, I'm 99% sure Mechner knows tricks are a 'thing'.
And then "[...] some leading question, like [...], or something like that. [...], I can't think of anything better as of now."
I think we'd just waste his time, and force him to think about whether or not the tweet warrants some kind of reply.
If there were an ongoing 'vote for your favorite tricks' thing, or some contest, or something, then we'd have actual news...
I mean, if you actually want the tweet, maybe you can give me the exact text, and I'll simply paste it.

Yes, I was just reading his journal day before yesterday and he has mentioned that he fixed a bug and then shipped it for QA and then some another bug was live, and something like that. Also on some day he had written, that there's a bug, but it's fine to ship the game without fixing it because nobody would notice it, or something similar, I don't remember quite clearly. So you are right in some sense.

Yes, maybe you can do this thing, or you want me to do something about it? I mean a Google Form or something like that would do to vote and count the numbers as well. I can do it, if you are busy.

What I meant was, that Mechner most likely already knows that mod authors and mod players share and discuss tricks within this community.
Particularly, I feel inclined to assume he has seen one or more of this, this or this.

Doing this manually wouldn't be a lot of work.

Let me rephrase what I mean to say.
In the video, I see trick 59 is used, to quickly pass a guard.
So, indeed a trick, but already known. ;)

Yes, it seems correct. After all he wasn't inactive on the internet, he would definitely have got some or the other video (some video related to trick) in his recommendations and/or tweet from someone. Or someone would have told him in-person. Who knows :)

Great, then you can do it now, I guess. Or maybe finish it by Sep 30 or something like that.

Trick 59 is used, of course, but what I wanted to show is you can press a tile which is next to a close gate if you are in combat the same way you would perform Trick 1. Perhaps you didn't see the video properly? (Or you saw it too fast (2x speed) that you didn't notice what I wanted to show. Or maybe I explained it wrongly?)

For some reason, I didn't register that bit.
Added as 152.
