It's not about the DOS version, but the improved Genesis/Megadrive version by Master Linkuei.
In this version, I've managed to get killed in an attack/counter-attack duel... but the prince remained alive, allowing me to kill the guard and move on. All that happened is that the prince's sword disappeared, but was still usable. I was even able to go through the closed gate that leads to the room shown in the screenshot. I was also able to drink a life potion to regain full health and exit the level.
