Probably one way to find out is to check
magazines, particularly ads for the game.

Yeah, it really was expensive. When reading through the magazine scans, I noticed that many reviews that scored various aspects of the game separately gave the game's price a D grade.

Isn't price for Apple II really too expensive? I mean it was a dying platform and it's in the second rank of pricing...

Well, it looks to me like regular prices for a video game today (at least in France, it probably varies from one country to another), so I'm not surprised.

Regular for triple A games.
Sure, its fluid/realistic animation was unique at the time, but
Prince of Persia was not a triple A game.
Final Fantasy VII (1997), according to Wikipedia, "had a staff of over 100, with a combined development and marketing budget of around $80 million".
I think
Prince of Persia was strikingly/too expensive.
Again, you can also tell by the bad grades it got for its price.
[Edit: Attached some price grades I could find. The one on the very right is for PoP2.]
