Mods not yet on PoPOT

Post by David »

Here are the mods I mentioned at viewtopic.php?p=15521#p15521

I also tried to figure out their title and author, but some of these mods give no clues.

Nice. Even with the help of scripts that must've taken some time to put together.
I guess when I have time - should be in the near future - I'll go through them to see which ones pass the threshold of notability(*) and I'll mass add those to popot.org.
(*) Not almost-copies of others, more than a couple of levels changed, things like that. At first glance 15-25% or so of them.
Or maybe none, if I decide it's too much work and not necessary since they're already available here. :P I dunno, we'll see.

file17.zip seems to come from here: http://web.archive.org/web/200409120902 ... ype=&ini=0
or ultimately here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www ... d/uploads*
It's also here: viewtopic.php?f=73&t=378 (But in the version attached to your post, levels 12-14 are different.)
This also clarifies the author of the "Green" vdungeon here: http://www.popot.org/custom_levels.php? ... UNGEON.DAT

I recently tried some of these mods.

LEVELS_william.dat
Levels 1-6 are easy, even the big potions are at easy places.
On level 7 there is a deep pit with a (yellow) guard at the bottom. It's either impossible, or maybe I should use Trick 11 somehow?

who_is_this_LEVELS.DAT
Level 1: Moderate difficulty until I meet the first guard (in room 11).
The kid has no sword then, but behind this guard is a button that opens the way forward. I couldn't get further than that.
Level 2: I couldn't get past the first blue guard (in room 4).

want_hard_LEVELS.DAT
Level 7: In room 2 (second guard) it looks like I have to go through the wall?

the_shadow_LEVELS_3.DAT
Level 1: Hard. You meet guards while the kid has no sword, so you have to lure them away from the places you want to go.
Levels 2-3: I didn't try them.

arjak_LEVELS.DAT
Level 1: Not too hard, just a bit long. At one place you have to press an "invisible" (stuck) opener.

LEVELS_william.dat, level 7 is probably just unfinished. Seeing how easy 1-6 are, and that 8 and up haven't been changed.

want_hard_LEVELS.DAT, that room is interesting. The guard doesn't draw his sword when he's looking left, and it's possible to trap him left of the gate. But what to do next...

Norbert wrote:LEVELS_william.dat, level 7 is probably just unfinished.
It also has an unreachable big red potion, so this might be the case.
Norbert wrote:want_hard_LEVELS.DAT, that room is interesting.
Trick 32 shows how to push a guard through a wall.
Is it possible to do its opposite, that is, to make the guard push the kid through a wall?

Update: You don't need the guard.
Climb up to the top row, run left once, turn right, and jump.
The kid will fall through the wall as in Trick 24 or 41.
Now I'm stuck with the yellow guard...

By the way, I think I found where is this level from:
At http://www.popot.org/popuw_forum_archive/mia.php, the third line from the bottom is: "You want hard level? You got it!"

Meanwhile, I tried some more of these mods.

file17.zip
Levels 1-2: Both levels are similar to the original, so they are easy.

levels_YR.dat
Level 1: Not too hard, just a bit long.
It's possible to enter a closed exit door at the bottom, after you opened the *other* exit door with the button in the same room.
The room with the chomper is glitched, it contains some balcony tiles.

I tried a couple more mods:

blood445_MOD.dat
Level 1: This level is only about fighting guards.
On levels 2-4, parts of the original levels are recognizable.
Level 2: The first half is full of green potions. There are flip potions at places where you would step. The guards are hard, but the level is otherwise straightforward.
Level 3: Easy.
Level 4: Unfinishable?

Single screen prison.zip
Level 1: As the name says, this level has only one room.
(Well, there is a second (empty) room, but the kid immediately falls into the first and you can't go back.)
The exit door is opened by a closer, but it closes a gate that is between you and the exit.
I don't know how to finish this level.

eagleset.dat
Level 1:
The idea of the first part of the level: There are two series of gates and open buttons in two distant rooms.
(There is a loose floor above each button.)
Each button opens the next gate in the other room.
There is a bug on the level: Event 4 points to a loose floor. It should point to the gate on the right side of that loose floor.
(Something similar happened with 4D PoP and Leteipa.)
I got stuck: At the green guard, there is a button that opens the gate behind the yellow guard.
But I can't get past the yellow guard, he always turns left and pushes me off the ledge.

Level 4: This level is unfinished. It doesn't even have an exit door.

ilkka_LEVELS.DAT
Level 1-2: Long levels. Both have one big potion.
The button that opens the exit is far from the exit on both levels.

7yearslater_mod1.rar
This one comes with a modified EXE that says "Good Luck" instead of "Loading", gives only 35 minutes, and enables some tiles.
These levels are shorter than those of the previous mod.
Level 1: In one room there are 9 chompers.
Level 2: This level was changed to palace.
Both levels need some loose floor tricks, and both have gates that must be opened early, or you'll get stuck at the end of the level. (Remember the original level 9?)

This one is by Kaslghnoon, who last visited this forum in May.
There's a (one-post) thread about this mod here.

[Edit:]

This may not be a real problem though, because it takes some time for the loose tile to fall onto the drop button.
There is enough time. (You can test this by temporarily removing the guard.)
So far, I can get past the guard from left to right, while the top left gate has only started closing for about 4 seconds.

Thanks for the info!

You're right, if I run over the loose floor and then run-jump, I can go through the gate before it closes. (But I don't always succeed.)
The question is, how to do this if the guard is alive? (And the top gate should also be opened.)
Norbert wrote: So far, I can get past the guard from left to right, while the top left gate has only started closing for about 4 seconds.
I can jump through the guard from left to right, but only if the left loose floor is not yet broken.
After this, the guard either kills the kid, or falls down.
The first case is obviously bad, in the second case I can't open the top gate.

I also figured out that I can make the guard come left a bit. (After the kid lands in the middle row: crouch, run, crouch)
Then I can flip him when the kid is in the bottom row.
And I can even run-jump through the guard left-to-right.
But I can't come back.

I tried a couple more mods:

tournamentplus.zip
Level 1: A short level that feels like it's "floating in air". Lots of places to fall into room 0.
There are guards, but you can kill some of them without really fighting them.

PoPUTbeta1.0.DAT or POPUTbeta1.0.zip
As the name (of the folder in the ZIP) "Ultimate Tournament" says, these levels are mostly about guards.
These levels also feel like "floating in air".
Level 1: I couldn't get past the second guard.
Level 2: You can skip most of the level by running on the ceiling.
Level 3: Here the guards are skeletons. Some "die" before you could fight them.

CLOCK.rar
This mod comes with a custom EXE. It displays "CLOCK TOWER PRISON" on ctrl-V.
Level 1: A tower level with lots of climbing and jumps. And big empty spaces.
Level 2: There is a room with 6 big potions, but the gate on the way back might close on you.
You have to fight 3 fat guards with many (35!) HPs. (But you can push them into the holes.)
The game ends in the room after the last guard.

Moresnes.zip
This mod comes with SNES graphics.
This seems like a complete mod with levels 1-14 (and 15) changed.
I played levels 1-3 so far. They are big levels with many gates and buttons. (But not as confusing as SNES level 19.)
There many things that suggest that the level is bigger than it is, like unopenable gates, or ledges you cannot reach.
The levels are non-linear, you often get to places where you have been before, or see a closed gate that will be opened later.

I don't know why is it called "Moresnes".
If it was made only to show off the graphics, then why would someone make 14 completely new levels?

Starting before the first loose tile, take a small step left, then run left far enough before running right to make a running jump. (far enough = to prevent the game from 'helping' you jump right before the first loose tile) Then, after you land, immediately move forward to pass the guard. Then simply hit him off the platform.
David wrote:I don't know why is it called "Moresnes".
Maybe it was named with an existing SNES mod in mind. These two, for example, were released before (2007, 2004) the Moresnes mod (2009):

That works. But sometimes I do it wrong.

It's possible to backstab the third guard: Turn him left, step to the edge, jump right, immediately press left and shift.
It's similar to this: viewtopic.php?p=12789#p12789
Norbert wrote: Maybe it was named with an existing SNES mod in mind.
The two mods you linked are conversions of the original SNES levels.
But this mod is only using SNES graphics.

Ah, you use trick 16 twice, it seems, at 1:09 and 1:36, and without getting hit.
