Etiquette of a Member

Post by Kaslghnoon »

Please use the forum instead of chat or private messaging to ask for assistance and to share observations, codes, or anything that can help other members/guests in the future.

One of the main objectives of a message board is to be reachable when a Google search is made for a very specific topic. Chatbox discussions never show up in a Google search. Posting in the forum also can prohibit redundant questions from being asked. Even if the same question was asked more than once, the asker can be quickly referred to the first topic.

Below is how I envision etiquette of a member with regards to utilizing this website's communications resources:

Chat: Use for chatting, out of boredom, bouncing ideas back and fourth, informal opinions, informal announcements concerning the release of a mod/utility, the informal release of an incomplete mod/utility

PM: Use for private communications, anything that could spoil a newly released mod without the active author's consent, asking for assistance and sharing files in private to avoid spoiling your own mod/utility, communicate spam/bugs/glitches/errors of the website/forum/chat with administrators/moderators (there is no reason to publicly discuss these problems in the forum unless it is certain that they can serve a purpose in the future)

Forum: Use to share ideas, codes, formal releases of complete level editors/mods/utilities, ask other forum members/staff for assistance, spoil inactive authors' abandoned mods, spoil your own mod, spoil active authors' mods while their general consent has been implied, to use the "Off-Topic" section out of boredom, announce the launch of another PoP related website

With proper usage, both princed.org and popot.org can be headed in the right direction and leeches can be converted to valuable members.

Kaslghnoon, I agree with you that it's best if questions that others may also have (currently or in the future) are being asked on the forum.
In the past I've answered certain questions posted in the shoutbox on the forum to make the answers easier to find. (Examples here and here.)
More generally speaking, I agree with the scope of your post.

At the end of the video about PoP modding I'm working on, when this forum gets mentioned, I'll make sure to mention the 'etiquette' you posted here...
...that is, I'll mention the availability of PMs/threads/shoutbox, and what each of them is meant for.

Did you post about this because you think the shoutbox is being misused?
I haven't followed everything, but I think most of the recent shoutbox stuff was shoutbox material.

PM is being misused when asking for assistance. There is no reason to keep technical PoP matters private unless one of the following is true:
-Sharing the info can open the door for lessening the prestige of a future mod
-Sharing the info can open the door for plagiarism (refer to The Quiet Levels to see why I chose to PM David instead of publicly posting the info at that time)

I do realize that I am in the minority here... About the shoutbox: Its very existence constructs a communication barrier for people like myself who have learned to avoid anything that resembles a chatbox. It is best to keep everything important away from the shoutbox because speaking for myself: They will go unanswered and most often ignored.

Yes, the shoutbox is volatile (or should I say "fleeting"; I'm not a native English speaker).
Posting anything important there would be unwise, unless perhaps if it's only useful to another forum member that someone is having a real-time conversation with.
I also agree with what you write about private messages.
