New 2D Prince of Persia Game Reportedly in Development

Post by Andrew »

Ubisoft is reportedly working on a new 2D Prince of Persia game.

According to French website Portail du Jeu Video (via Eurogamer), the new Prince of Persia utilizes the UbiArt Framework engine, which was used in the creation of Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. UbiArt Framework also is powering the upcoming Child of Light and Valiant Hearts from Ubisoft.

The report suggests that individual parts of the Prince's body — torso, legs, arms, etc. — will be animated separately, making him look like a 3D model. As usual for the franchise, the Prince will reportedly run, wall-jump and perform sword attacks in the new 2D game.

Early last year, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told IGN that the Prince of Persia franchise was "paused" at the time. "I think it is fair to say that, right now, Prince of Persia is being paused," he said in January 2013. "But we said the same thing for some other brands that suddenly popped up because a team is willing to do it.”

IGN has reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the reported development of a new 2D Prince of Persia game. And IGN chronicled the history of Ubisoft Montreal, the developers who have created numerous Prince of Persia games, earlier this year.

Has this been discussed here yet? I'm certainly excited but also apprehensive. Since as far as I know it'll be the first 2D game in the series in over 2 decades it better be good!

The meaning of "2D" appears to be subject to change, so it'll be interesting to see what they'll come up with.
Trine 2, for example, I'd call that 3D, but one of my buddies recently called it 2D.

I don't see how Trine 2 qualifies as "classic"/pure 2D. 2.5D perhaps, or more accurately a 3D game with a 2D playing field.
