Hi all
Joining here since I need some help getting POP3D up and running in Win98. Used to play this game when I was younger and recently purchased an old Win98 computer to get back into the nostalgia with some old games.
Unfortunately, when entering the game, there seems to be some sort of black box glitch in the game, as if the graphics aren't fully loaded. As soon as I start walking, I disappear into this void. I've added a video here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yG0m_GYdLbs
I've installed the game from the original CD and also applied the v1.01 patch (ensured it was in the correct Directory, and not the Windows directory), but no luck.. Rayman 2 (also a 3D game), works fine.
Specs of the computer:
- Windows 98SE
- SIS 6326 graphics card
Any thoughts for a fix? Let me know if you need any additional info and thanks in advance!
Black box glitch in POP3D on Win98
Re: Black box glitch in POP3D on Win98
I played POP3D as well when I was younger, I was quite hyped when the game came out. It ran like a slide show on the computer my parents had back then (but I still had a lot of fun with it). I also have been tweaking around with Windows 98 retro systems recently, I'm really enjoying seeing these old games running again (especially now that I can finally get them to run smoothly with better hardware).
I suspect the graphics card might be the culprit. I found this 46 minute video about the card titled "Worst Game Graphics Cards - SiS 6326"

You could try to see if there are graphics drivers available, maybe that could make a difference. Or, try to swap out the card for another brand.

Thanks! I also thought about the graphics card. Will check some drivers and otherwise just get another card installed and give that a try! Any recommendations?Falcury wrote: ↑December 25th, 2024, 4:29 pm I played POP3D as well when I was younger, I was quite hyped when the game came out. Assuming your system has an AGP slot, I would recommend the Nvidia Geforce Ti 4200 (ideally one with 128 MB VRAM), which has good compatibility and performance and should also be not too expensive to find. Although lots of other cards from Nvidia, ATI and 3dfx should work fine!

Thanks again! Will do some browsing and gift it to myself as a late Christmas presentFalcury wrote: ↑December 26th, 2024, 1:09 pmAssuming your system has an AGP slot, I would recommend the Nvidia Geforce Ti 4200 (ideally one with 128 MB VRAM), which has good compatibility and performance and should also be not too expensive to find.
