Prince of Persia 2 for the NEC PC-9821

Post by spaztron64 »

Nana, who translates a lot of dialogue-filled PC98 games, has sent me the HDI and FDI files of Prince of Persia 2
for the PC9821, so I will demonstrate the first level of that game.

If you want to try it out, just say so, and I will provide a link.

Here you go.

Both the FDI and HDI have to be loaded in an emulator and at least 3.6 Megabytes of RAM have to be provided by the emulator.

I could get it work in this emulator: http://www.zophar.net/pc98/t98-next.html
(In the other emulators I tried, I get an error message about VRAM.)

This version looks much like PoP2 for FM Towns.

No, PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) is not the same as the PC-98xx.
They are both Japanese PCs though, and both were (co-)developed by NEC.

Hello!
I'm brand new on this forum, so first of all thank you very much for welcoming me! :D

I'd like to play PoP2 on NEC PC-9821 emulator because I've read several times that it's the best version of this episode.
I read that this version was equivalent to the FM Towns version if I understood correctly, but I prefer PC-98 because in the end I want to play it on RetroArch, which has a NEC PC-98 core (Neko Project II, and Neko Project II Kai), and no FM Towns core (if I'm not talking nonsense)

1. I tried to play on Neko Project II (stand alone), following the following tutorial: https://46okumen.com/pc-98-emulation/
The game launches well when I launch the "np21nt.exe" executable (not the "np21.exe"), however I have no sound + no music!
=> Do you know what I have to do to get sound? (I see in the video you posted "spaztron64" that you're also on Neko Project II, maybe you know how to setup it?)

2. I tried to play PoP2 on RetroArch with the core "Neko Project II Kai", but I don't know how to load both FDI and HDI files at the same time at launch...
=> Could you help me with that? (maybe it will be better if I ask on the RetroArch forum...).

Thanks a lot in advance!

Very nice day to you!

MatLab

PS: Sorry for my bad english, I'm french

I tried it now, and the same happens here.

I didn't find the solution yet, but I found this:
The Other -> Wave record menu item will record the sound correctly into the WAV file.
So sound emulation works, only the output is broken for some reason.

The sound of the emulated floppy drive can be heard, however.
(It can be turned on/off with Device -> Sound -> Seek sound.)

UPDATE:
Close the emulator if it's running.
In np21nt.ini there is this setting: M_Volume=0
Change 0 to 255 and save the ini.
Now start the emulator again. The sound should work now.

I don't know why is it zero by default, or why is this setting not available in Device -> Sound option...
