What are these on the wall on the last level?

In the last rooms of the last level of PoP2, there are some odd... things on the walls. (See screenshot.) And they move!
They look like demon faces...

PoP2 for the Mac contains function names like "AnimFinlGargoyle", "DrawFinlGargoyle", and "TriggerFinlGargoyle".
So maybe gargoyle is the answer?

I just found this: viewtopic.php?p=14756#p14756

1. I think the "different background?" in level 14, room 7 and 8 are the initial frames for the faces on the walls or something like that.

That's not exactly "discussing", though.


Also, PoP2 for the Mac has bigger images of them.
I could not find any maps for that version, though.
So I made a screenshot myself.

These look like bats, with wings and fangs.
Or maybe spiders.

They look like skulls to me... Skulls with wings...
