Easy SDLPop installation on Linux

Hello. I'm new here. I only recently discovered SDLPop, and I love it. Being in my mid fourties I have fond memories of this game from my "youth" :). The book from Jordan Mechner was fascinating too, so I was delighted to see SDLPop!

I wanted to make it easier for people to get hold of SDLPop so I made a snap of it. If you're on a system that supports snaps (Ubuntu 14.04, 16.04, 17.10, 18.04, Debian 9, Linux Mint, elementary OS, Arch, OpenSUSE, Fedora 27 and others) you can now:-

snap install sdlppop

I've setup an automated job which will build new versions as they come out. So once you install, it will automatically update as and when new updates appear. You can see the 'store' page at https://snapcraft.io/sdlpop

If there's any suggestions for improvements in the way the snap is packaged, happy to hear them :)

Also, happy to hand this snap over to upstream if they prefer to own it themselves.

I see this made the news.
[Edit: But judging by Facebook comments, keyboard mode is/was broken?]

At least one online article:

Plus, I noticed a previous Vita port also got some press, e.g.

Hey, I just found this in the Ubuntu software central!
SDLPoP_in_software_central_3x2.png
A suggestion: The short description under the title should be something better.
If I view the full description of the game, then my description from GitHub appears in the long description field.
It also appears here: https://snapcraft.io/sdlpop

Another thing: I found SDLPoP only under "all games".
Does it appear under any of the subcategories? If not, why?

I guess I should try the package to see if that is the case...

Snapcraft also mentioned the package recently.

I see their description mentions grabbing, so I added it to the Readme.

A month ago someone from Snapcrafters posted this ticket: https://github.com/NagyD/SDLPoP/issues/190

Linux Mint (the distro I use) is dropping support for Snap.

I am using Ubuntu 18.04 and I installed it using Ubuntu Software Installer, but I couldn't record (rather save) replays. I did the same procedure which I used to do on Windows, but those didn't get saved. I don't think I saw REPLAY SAVED message, so I guess it's the permission issue... There was no replays directory as well, and when I tried to create I got the message as Read Only File System.

Am I doing anything wrong? Please help me... Thanks!

Yes, this is most likely a permissions issue.

It's the same as with the RetroPie version. Related posts here:

A solution is to download SDLPoP directly from here (ZIP).
