Here are two other tricks, based on a video by yaqxsw:

This well-known trick was already mentioned here.
I hope this video makes it a bit clearer what exactly happens, because the loose tile is in the middle of the room.

Some small comments on this trick:
- You don't need to jump exactly twice. Jumping into the gate from almost any position works, including a running jump into the gate.
- What causes this bug is the tapestry under the gate. If there is no tapestry (or gate) under the gate, this trick won't work.

About this trick:

From what I have tested, a few conditions have to be met for the closed gate trick to work:
>>If the gate is on the right end of the screen (tiles 10, 20, or 30)
-No open switch should be in your room
-No guard should be in the next room to the right
-The guard you are fighting should attack
>>If the gate is in the next room to the left (original level 5 trick)
-There has to be a guard in the left room
-The closed gate is cannot be further than 4 tiles from your room
In both cases like mk1995 said all you do is just back off from the guard you are fighting. The only two mods I have played that allowed this trick are the original and the Levels05 by Steven Fayers. In Levels05, this trick is needed to get the life potion in level 5 (video) and it also can be used in level 2, room 10. I will try and see if any other mods allow this trick. It doesn't look doable in the original level 10.

If the gate is on the left side, you don't need a guard in that room, and the gate should be exactly on the 4th spot from the right:

(If it's on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd, it won't work.)

If the gate is on the right side, you definitely cannot simply back off.
I've been trying to make it for about half an hour, without success.
The best I've been able to do so far is die in the room on the right (by switching places with the guard several times).
Maybe it only works with certain PoP1 versions...

Hurray, I understand how to do it now.
Your starting position matters.
I was trying to do it in a level where the prince turns from right to left when the level starts.
In such levels, you need to put away the sword first and take it out again.
Then, back up into the gate just far enough. (If you back up too far, you will go through the gate, but the guard kills you.)
Then, simply wait to get hit by the guard. (Don't press any key just before/while/right after he does.)

It's not that difficult, press up a little later than you'd normally do.
