Names of the levels

Post by David »

I collected the names of the levels from all PoP1 games and level editors that have them.

Code: Select all

15 Potion POTIONS potions
Notes:
Apple II has no level 15. Its copy protection was based on a custom disk format instead.
I sorted the columns by the order of release.
Each column seems to be based on the previous. RS changed the names of levels 1,8,11,13 and 14.

Sources:
Apple II: http://www.promax.media.pl/~matuszewski ... incapp.zip, offset 0x21300 of disk 2 and disk 3. Do a bitwise AND with 0x7F.
Also mentioned here, the names there come from Mechner's documentation (page 5).
Macintosh: Near the end of the file "Prince of Persia". PoPMap also shows the names.
RoomShaker: http://www.popot.org/level_editors.php? ... oomShaker1 v1.79

I've asked Mechner about the origin of the name of the eighth level.
If he replies, I'll post his reply in this thread.

It seems that PoP Classic gives different names to the levels:
Level 1 - Prison
Level 2 - Barracks
Level 3 - Catacombs
Level 4 - Storage
Level 5 - Courtyard
Level 6 - Tower Entrance
Level 7 - Wine Cellar
Level 8 - Warehouse
Level 9 - Palace Reservoir
Level 10 - Garden
Level 11 - Balcony
Level 12 - High Tower
Level 13 - Jaffar's Quarters
Level 14 - Princess's Room

I think this counts as proof positive that cracked pop1 is the true original game, and is how Mechner intended the game to be.

Interesting guess, could be.
Your cryptic reference to the guide, it seems you mean three jumps to reach level nine.
Maybe one day Mechner will explain the number to us.

It seems you are at 3 ¿? to level 9 in some moment in level 8. Here are my hypothesis:

There are 4 guards. You need to jump more than 3 times, to reach lvl 9, so it can't be the correct answer.

When you open the door to lvl 9, you can reach it only playing in rooms 3, 4 and 16 . You reach lvl 9 from room 3. You have to wait 3 seconds (or cycles) in mouse's room to open the door. The mouse walks 3 tiles left to open the door, and then it flees going 3 tiles right. There are 3 torches in room 3.

Maybe there is another answer related with number 3, to reach lvl 9 :?: :?:
I lost my guide, so I don't know the correct answer.

Hey, that's cool that he replied.
And that kind of makes sense too, that it'd stand for March 29.
Still a bit strange to keep the level name like that through.
Plus, it's interesting that he writes made on and not finished on.
