PoP1 demo version

Post by David » May 20th, 2013, 7:20 pm

I recently found out that there was a demo version of PoP1. You can download it from here:
http://web.archive.org/web/199910040243 ... nce_5.html
It lets you play only the first two levels.

I could not find this version on other PoP sites, including these:
http://princeofpersia.ppa.pl/down.html
http://popuw.com/download.html
Andrew's Ultimate Collection: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1599

The demo versions of PoP2 are already available here: http://popuw.com/download2.html

These quotes can be found on the cover you posted here.

I compared the files with the full game.

These files are unchanged:
GUARD.DAT
GUARD2.DAT
PRINCE.DAT
PV.DAT

These files are missing:
CPALACE.DAT
EPALACE.DAT
FAT.DAT
GUARD1.DAT (CGA/EGA palette for palace guards)
SHADOW.DAT
SKEL.DAT
VIZIER.DAT
VPALACE.DAT

These files are different: (the numbers are the resource IDs)
CDUNGEON.DAT -> missing 1301-1323 (chomper)
DIGISND1.DAT -> compressed!
DIGISND2.DAT -> compressed! + missing: chopper (10047), mirror (10045), skeleton alive (10044), something chopped (10046)
DIGISND3.DAT -> compressed!
EDUNGEON.DAT -> missing 1301-1323 (chomper)
IBM_SND1.DAT -> snd01 (10001, falling) is not empty, snd37 (10037, guard death 1) and snd43 (10043, guard death 2) are different
IBM_SND2.DAT -> snd53 (10053, jaffar and clock apprearing) is different, snd56 (10056, winning theme) is missing
KID.DAT -> different CGA palette (empty hitpoints are invisible, and the star-shape that appears when the kid is hurt is partially transparent)
LEVELS.DAT -> contains only levels 0,1,2
MIDISND1.DAT -> missing: arrive to princess (10026), end level with shadow (10032), guard death 2 (10043), large presentation (10029), low weight (10039), time and presentation (10040), time over (10036)
MIDISND2.DAT -> missing: winning theme (10056)
PRINCE.EXE -> one byte is different
TITLE.DAT -> ending text (44) is empty
VDUNGEON.DAT -> chomper is missing (1301-1323)

Nice, detailed overview of the differences.

Yeah, that image is part of a PDF file I found when I looked for the text by Nibble. :)
I was wondering if maybe "Nibble" was the nick of a person (whose opinion was highly valued in the gaming industry at the time) and only later found out it was a magazine.
