Broken room links outside PoP

Post by David »

As you might have already seen, Norbert made a wiki page about broken room links with some examples from popular culture.
(Matrix Revolutions, Portal, Cube 2: Hypercube)

Here are my examples...

Video Games
  • Some PoP1 (and possibly PoP2) mods, obviously.
  • ZZT: Marked as white stripes between non-adjacent rooms on the maps. (long page!)
At other times, it's marked with a discretely placed pair of "A"-s.
(This game has a built-in level editor, and there among others, you can manually set room links.)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Not marked on the maps... (long page!)
But their interactive map says "Go up 4 times" in room 12-07, where you couldn't do that if the links were regular.
And the same room has a path leading down.
    (Hehe, Links... :) )
  • In Scientific American, in the Mathematical Games section, there was a description about a Star Trek game.
(That the readers could make for themselves based on the article.)
There, if your spaceship leaves the screen in one direction, it appears on the other edge.
The article calls this "toroidal world".
Here is it in a table of contents: http://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/tex/bib/to ... ember:1986
(Why did they separate the section's name and the title of the "current episode"?)
I don't know whether the article is available for free. I've read it in the printed version, many years ago...
Animated series
  • Jim Button: In one episode the main characters enter a hallway, and if they try to leave it at either end, they appear at the other end.
I don't know the title of the episode.
Here is a list (in German), but I just can't find this episode...
The same episode also has a magical hourglass that can stop time (eh?), owned by a young Egyptian couple, and it's somehow responsible for the wrap-around.
  • Iznogoud: In the episode "The Mysterious Poster Hanger".
The two main characters get trapped in a magical poster. When they try to escape down, they arrive at the top, and vice versa.
(This series has an Aladdin-like setting, by the way.)
Comics Hmmm... Maybe the above ones are not really "broken room links", but more like "breaking the border between panels"?
So here is something more like it: Real life
  • There are hypotheses about the shape of the universe that say it's finite and unbounded.
That is, if you traveled in the some direction for a long time, you could get back to where you started.
Okay, now this starts to look like a TV Tropes page... :)
(Actually, they have a page about a similar topic...)

Nice overview.
Maybe link to this thread from the Wiki?

That only had 2 seasons, and 1 is online here.
I guess you have a 50/50 chance to find the episode there?
By the way, a feature film adaptation of the novel appears to be in the making.

Found it! Episode 14, from 11:00.
And I also found another episode guide that mentions this, unlike the other one.

Another one, and this one mentions PoP4D:
There's an old russian mod of the 1990 Prince of Persia game, called 4D Prince of Persia.
It takes advantage of the way room connections are programmed and creates levels where normal directions don't apply: Levels that loop and wrap around, corridors where running back doesn't take you where you came from, infinite pits...

Last time I tried, I could not add any external links: viewtopic.php?p=19868#p19868
And it still does not work.

Maybe one day poirot will either fix the CAPTCHA, or give admin rights to a volunteer who will.
