Letters above potions and words from manuals

Post by David »

As you may now, some versions of PoP1 ask for the first letter of a word from the manual.
(Or, in case of the Amstrad CPC, the whole word.)

I collected the copy protection codes from the many versions that have them.
(In the process I found some language versions that are not on PoPUW. For example, Amiga DE/FR, Atari ST EN, Amstrad CPC EN.)

I also searched for the matching manuals, and the matching words.
(Interestingly, sometimes the letters don't match the words.)

The coordinates are written as page, line, word. (Some games display them in reverse order.)
I extracted the letters from the executables, unless otherwise noted.

Note: Many letters don't match. Maybe there was another manual? (Or the cracker changed them for fun?)
(This version was cracked by setting the copy protection level to -1.
Also, five 0x90 bytes are written at offset 0x43D1. This causes the game to crash when the kid draws his sword in the demo.
Perhaps he used an offset from another version.)

I want to figure out how the codes are stored in the disk image, to see what the "???"s should be.

I found the Spanish manual some time ago here: http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page ... s&num=1684
The thing is, there are no separate potion codes for this manual.
Instead, they just included the English and French manuals in small print at the end.
