Princed channel video
hey guys, today I got an idea why not create a YT channel to which we could add our prince of persia videos and tutorials (English, French, Russian, etc.) ?
the idea could be fun! And I thought we could add the logo Princed and put our video contest.
it could gather for the world community !
( ok i use google translator for wrote this message xD )

We could do that in the future.spartacus735 wrote:why not create a YT channel to which we could add our prince of persia videos and tutorials
I'm still planning to make an instructional video myself.
That video could be one of the videos added to that new YT channel, I guess.
Re: Princed channel video
All right, let's see if we can put together a video that introduces visitors to the Prince of Persia modding community.
What I have in mind is a video that has a little bit of everything, possibly in this order:
- History of PoP1 itself (mention Mechner's old journals; briefly mention the Apple II source code).
- Ancient history of mod making (Princedit, 4D Prince of Persia, PoPMap for Mac, POPMAP, and so on).
- History of the modding community (RoomShaker, PR, Princed at cnu.net.ar, FreePrince, and so on).
- Documentation (Specifications of File Formats, and so on).
- Documentation used to create level editors (RoomShaker, apoplexy, Pr1SnesLevEd, RoomShaker II) and other tools (CusPop, PR, SAV and HOF editors).
- These programs are being used to create over 100 custom mods (PoP1, PoP2, SNES); mention PoP1 Studio and the Total Packs.
- Some mods contain visual tricks (footage of sections of Repetition of Time, Prince of Wateria, maybe other mods).
- Mention that, while working on and playing the mods, over 50 PoP1 tricks were discovered and lots of speedruns and level maps have been made.
- Mention websites with more information (popuw.com, princed.org, popot.org; maybe also foreign sites like princeofpersia.ppa.pl).
- Mention this forum.
The video could show footage of various programs, tools, mods, and so on, accompanied by a narrative that explains everything.
Maybe use several different voices; maybe add PoP1-related greetings in various languages.
Please let me know what you think, let's work on something cool. Suggestions, comments, criticism, it's all welcome.
Also, if you're comprehensible when speaking English, have proper equipment to record the narrative and are willing to record it, squeak.
I'll write a concept text in a couple of days, that we can then polish until everyone is happy with it.

Re: Princed channel video
Here are my notes so far.
Still a lot of work to do.
This video will introduce you to the/our Prince of Persia modding community!
[same thing but in different languages]
[say what is in the video: first history, then a recap of tools and docs to use for modding]
In October 1989, Brøderbund released "Prince of Persia", a platform game developed by Jordan Mechner. [mention Mechner's old journals?] "Prince of Persia" was initially developed for the Apple II home computer, but was ported to a wide range of platforms, including the DOS operating system. The very first modifications of the game that were in circulation allowed the player to skip the software copy protection. More thorough reverse engineering efforts first took place in the early 1990s and the early 2000s.
Notable releases in the early 1990s were:
- October 1991: Princedit, a level editor for DOS,
- July 1992: Prince of Persia Editor, a save game editor,
- May 1993: PoPMap, a level editor for the Macintosh,
- February 1994: /4D Prince of Persia/, its custom levels ... the first fairly well-known mod,
Notable releases in the early 2000s were:
- December 2000: POPMAP, a Hungarian level editor for DOS (after research in a PoP thread at index.hu that was started in January that year),
- June 2002: first release of RoomShaker, a PoP1 level editor for Windows
Modern history of the "Prince of Persia" modding community coincides with the 10th release of RoomShaker. In March 2003, the Princed project had its website at princed.com.ar and used a forum at cnu.net.ar. Activities realised in the framework of this project included:
- Figuring out the DOS port's graphic formats (PG),
- Figuring out the DOS port's sound formats (PS),
- Writing a tool to export and import resources (PR),
- Creating a level editor for DOS and later Windows (Princed)
In July 2004, not long after the forum of the Princed project moved to forum.princed.com.ar, another ...:
- The creation of an open source ... of the DOS version (FreePrince).
In April 2005, the POPUW.com domain was registered, the "Prince of Persia Unofficial Website". During the next three years, the forum of POPUW became quite popular. After the Princed project had succesfully imported "Prince of Persia 2" resources in January 2006, notable posts on the POPUW forum at the end of 2006 were:
- August 2006: several posts about modifying the PRINCE.EXE file,
- October 2006: the release of the /Repetition Of Time/ mod.
During the next two years, notable developments were:
- January 2007: release of the first Total Pack, which provides a user-friendly interface for tweaking and playing custom levels.
- March 2007: release of Pr2LevEd, a Prince of Persia 2 level editor for Windows.
- October 2007: registration of the princed.org domain.
- October 2007: the first release of RoomShaker II, a Prince of Persia 2 level editor for Windows.
- April 2008: the first release of apoplexy, a Prince of Persia 1 level editor for Windows and GNU/Linux.
- November 2008: the forum of the Princed project moved from forum.princed.com.ar to the princed.org domain.
From mid 2008 to mid 2011, the POPUW website and its forum were down. During this period, on July 2009, the first version of Pr1SnesLevEd was released, a Prince of Persia 1 for SNES level editor for Windows.

Re: Princed channel video
This is almost correct but it should be (11) February 2003. (I checked at nic.ar).Norbert wrote:Modern history of the "Prince of Persia" modding community coincides with the 10th release of RoomShaker. In March 2003, the Princed project had its website at princed.com.ar and used a forum at cnu.net.ar.
Also, poirot gave me the precise release dates for Princed.
- - - - -
Princed 2.0b = 9 Feb 2003
Princed 2 = 11 Feb 2003
Princed 2.5b = 2 Apr 2003
Princed 2.5 FINAL = 29 Apr 2003
Princed 1 = 3 May 2003
- - - - -
Version 1 was released after version 2, because version 1 was intended to be a "pop driven hex editor" and not a final user product.
I will add this information to the Modding Timeline later today. [Edit: Done.]
So, it coincides with the 9th release of RoomShaker (= February 5, 2003).
Re: Princed channel video
programmer and other folks that have used RoomShaker, what would you say are that program's strong points?
Not compared to other level editors, just in and of itself.
I mean things like "intuitive", "feature-rich", "customizable", ...?
I haven't used it enough myself to really know, and I would like to mention some of the program's strengths in the video.
Also, any sections of mods that are so awesome they need to be shown in the video?
I'm going to make the video 720p at 60 fps, so...
...any raw AVI DOSBox videos of cool stuff is welcome, because I know how to properly re-encode (transcode) it from 70.086 to 60 fps.
(Currently YouTube doesn't support 60 fps, I think, but we'll be future proof.)
I'll also mention the RoomShaker editing tutorials.
I think it will be cool to include some screenshots of hex editor(s) and disassembled code as well.
Maybe mention some YouTube channels.
I'll continue working on the text tomorrow, and I'll include notes about what I think could be shown alongside the narrative in the next draft.
It's going to be sweet.

Re: Princed channel video
I've been thinking the last 40 minutes about a good title and subtitle for the video.
Here's what I've come up with.
title: Prince of Persia Modding
subtitle: A bit of history and how to get started
I've decided not to use the word "community", because the video already mentions the forum and such, and the video is primarily about the modding itself.
The title doesn't include the number "1", because there are also tools for and mods of PoP2.
If anyone has other/better ideas for the title and/or subtitle, please let me know.

Prince of Persia Modding
A bit of history and how to get started
= Intro =
In October 1989, Brøderbund released "Prince of Persia", a platform game developed by Jordan Mechner. "Prince of Persia" was initially developed for the Apple II home computer, but was ported to a wide range of platforms, including the DOS operating system and SNES video game console. For over two decades now, fans of "Prince of Persia" have modified various ports to change the game's appearance and behavior. Initially, the primary tools used for modifying the software, an act referred to as "modding", were hex editors and disassemblers. Over the years, many programs have been created to simplify the creation of "Prince of Persia" mods. In the beginning of the third millennium a small but avid modding community emerged that has been around ever since. This video, that has been created by members of aforementioned community, will give you a bit of history about "Prince of Persia" modding, will give you an overview of various tools and documents that you could use to create your own "Prince of Persia" mod, and will show you footage of a handful of mods.

- "The Persia Cheater", which adds a cheat menu to the Mac port. [show screenshot and "June 1994" in video]
In January 2000, a thread about "Prince of Persia" modding was created on the forum of Hungarian Internet portal Index.hu. [show the forum thread] In December 2000, about a year later, some of the regulars of that thread released "POPMAP", a Hungarian level editor for DOS.

The modern history of "Prince of Persia" modding starts on June 2002, with the first release of RoomShaker, a PoP1 level editor for Windows.
The Princed project started approximately when the 9th release of RoomShaker was published. In February 2003, the Princed project had its website at princed.com.ar and used a forum at cnu.net.ar. Activities realized in the framework of this project included:

- Writing a tool to export and import resources (PR),
- Creating a level editor for DOS and later Windows (Princed; its first release in Feb 2003)

In January 2000, a thread about "Prince of Persia" modding was created on the forum of Hungarian Internet portal Index.hu. [show the forum thread] In December 2000, about a year later, some of the regulars of that thread released "POPMAP", a Hungarian level editor for DOS.
= modern history =
The modern history of "Prince of Persia" modding starts on June 2002, with the first release of RoomShaker, a PoP1 level editor for Windows.
The Princed project started approximately when the 9th release of RoomShaker was published. In February 2003, the Princed project had its website at princed.com.ar and used a forum at cnu.net.ar. Activities realized in the framework of this project included:
- Figuring out the DOS port's graphic formats (PG),
- Figuring out the DOS port's sound formats (PS),
- Writing a tool to export and import resources (PR),
- Creating a level editor for DOS and later Windows (Princed; its first release in Feb 2003)
In July 2004, not long after the forum of the Princed project moved to forum.princed.com.ar, another ...:
- The creation of an open source ... of the DOS version (FreePrince).
Also: CusPop, allows you to generate a custom PRINCE.EXE file
Say: there were more tools, like CusAsm, the lightweight PRINCE.EXE assembler.
(Later, Total Packs would also arrive for PoP2 and C64.)

This is the final draft before I'll create the video.
In other words, if you want to give me any feedback, this is the right moment to read through the text.
Give me feedback no later than June 9th, thanks.
After that date, I will simply put together the video, publish it (some kind of new Princed channel on YouTube), and then move on to other stuff.
Remember:
Footage of gameplay, tools, mods, whatever. Please record at 60 fps. If you use DOSBox to record, send me the raw footage. Thanks.
Screenshots also welcome. If you want specific URLs to be included, again, let me know.
Note: I'm not a native English speaker, so grammar corrections are much appreciated!

Prince of Persia Modding
A bit of history and how to get started
= Introduction =
In October 1989, Brøderbund released "Prince of Persia",[show screenshot game or package cover] a platform game developed by Jordan Mechner.[show photo Mechner] "Prince of Persia" was initially developed for the Apple II home computer,[show image Apple II] but was later ported to a wide range of platforms, including the DOS operating system and SNES video game console.[show SNES and DOS images] For over two decades now, fans of "Prince of Persia" have modified various ports to change the game's appearance and behavior.[show something] Initially, the primary tools used for modifying the software, an act referred to as "modding", were hex editors and disassemblers.[show hex editor and disassembler(/-ed code)] Over the years, many programs have been created to simplify the creation of "Prince of Persia" mods.[show something] In the beginning of the third millennium a small but avid "Prince of Persia" modding community emerged that has been around ever since.[show something community-related] This video, that has been created by members of aforementioned community, will give you a bit of history about "Prince of Persia" modding,[show: 1 <summary of this point>] will give you an overview of various tools and documents that you could use to create your own "Prince of Persia" mod,[show: 2 <summary of this point>] and will show you video footage of a handful of mods.[show: 3 <summary of this point>]

Re: Princed channel video
Sorry for double/triple-posting, but I was just thinking that footage of Pirates of Persia has to be included in the video.
The graphics, the intro where Jaffar has a wooden leg and pirate bandana; it's awesome.
Are there any SNES mods that have graphical changes other than 'just' color changes?
(If so, which mod(s) and which levels/sections?)

Re: Princed channel video
This is my contribution:
Will you mention any POP 2 mod or any Snes mod? If so, the only options are Lost in the Forest 2 and "POP 2 mod OPR", and for snes I think Iso's training levels, Dungeons Of Hell, The Quiet Levels, my Miracles Don't Exist, are good mods. I don't know if any spartacus's mod is around in the forum, but he has a nice welldone mod in his Youtube channel, you may ask him if you want. Again, is my opinion.
I hoped my contribution helps
About the tricks, in my opinion those that are most seen in the mods. Not that I played a lot of mods, but tricks like 3, 4, 9, 14, 27, 29 and 25 maybe 55 and 40 should be mentioned and showed. In addition, one or two hard tricks like 33 and 48.= Tricks =
While working on these mods, while playing them, and while creating speedruns, over 50 tricks have been discovered. Here are some of the more interesting tricks.[Show tricks, which ones? Please help pick numbers from here]
About the mods, of course Repetion Of Time, Prince Of Wateria, Pirates Of Persia (nice mod), also a yaqxsw's mod, obviously the famous 4D POP, maybe you could mention one of mine like The Deserted Dungeons or The Shadow And The Flame Remake (I can make walkthroughs with DOSbox). All of these are just my options, since I haven't played many mods.= Mods =

As for Youtube channels, well there's the spartacus's channel, I've only seen his channel. I know that Khushal64n6 and Kaslghnoon have there own. Also yaqxsw makes walkthroughs, I don't know if you are interested in walkthroughs channels. Sure there are lots of channel dedicated to POP, I only know these. Some of the YouTube channels are:[Which ones to mention?]
Don't know, do you mean changes made with the graphic editor? If so, my still non-finnished mod will have little new tiles added. Also spart and Iso are making snes mods, and they may be using the graphic editor. But as for released mods, I believe none of them have graphical changes other than color changes. Are there any SNES mods that have graphical changes other than 'just' color changes?

I hoped my contribution helps
This will be my face if you can't win any of my mods
Re: Princed channel video
Thanks for your suggestions, robert.
Not sure about the tricks. I was thinking of 'crazy' tricks myself. Trick 40 sort of fits in that category, although it's probably too long to include in the video.
But maybe you're right that it should also include some easier tricks. I guess it could say something like "some easy", then show two or so easy tricks, then say something like "some hard", and show some hard tricks.
I think trick 1, for example, would be interesting to show (a approx. 5 second version of it), because it's something that most people wouldn't expect to be possible and it can have a big impact on how levels can be played and finished.
It's fun looking through these tricks, some of those discovered by yaqxsw are crazy.
Maybe 5-10 seconds or so for a clip.
Any recordings by anyone of any of them is welcome (60 fps or raw DOSBox AVI footage).
It's okay if no specific suggestion are being made; I should be able to record enough stuff to give the viewer an glimpse of what's possible/available.
For PoP2 it'll indeed be a little bit of both available mods.
He's probably too hard on himself though and he's just a perfectionist.
Not sure about mentioning his YouTube channel, because it has only 18 videos.
Maybe Khushal64n6's channel (almost 400 PoP videos) and MoscowTracer's channel (almost 100 PoP videos).
The video will just give the broad outlines, not all details.
Although I must say I really liked KJ's Iron Man 3 and Dark Knight Rises PoP trailers...
I think I'll include almost everyone who was/is into modding in the 'credits' of the video, not just those folks whose stuff is mentioned.
Yes, but he recently switched to a new username, so it may not be the best channel to mention.
Some footage of one of his mods, as you suggested, would be a good idea.
Yes, thanks.
I came up with one more thing myself: the Facebook page could be mentioned at the end of the video.
Yes, I agree; the plan is to show footage of it in the = 1990s and 2000 = section.robert wrote:the famous 4D POP

I will PM yaqxsw and ask him to send me raw footage of a section of Prince Unique or Extrem that he thinks would be cool for the video.robert wrote:a yaqxsw's mod
Can you send me raw (DOSBox AVI) footage of a section of a level that you think is interesting to show?robert wrote:one of mine like [...]

Not by name, I think (unless something needs to be mentioned), but some footage of them should/will be included.robert wrote:Will you mention any POP 2 mod or any Snes mod?

I don't think he has ever officially released anything, other than a seven-level alpha version of Temple of Ruins, that according to himself (in the chat) "suck".robert wrote:I don't know if any spartacus's mod is around in the forum, [...]
