SDLPoP crashes on the Raspberry Pi

I need help with tracking down why SDLPoP crashes on the Raspberry Pi.
The bug was reported here: https://github.com/NagyD/SDLPoP/issues/313

Back in 2014 I used an emulator to test how SDLPoP works on the Raspberry Pi.

The operating system included in that package is terribly outdated (it's from 2012), so apt can't install anything.
Which means I can't install git or SDL development libraries.

I tried to use the newest operating system from the official site (with the same emulator):
https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/ (the first download link)
Unfortunately, with this version, booting stops with a kernel panic.
