Hidden Japanese text in PoP1 SNES

Post by David »

You can find it this way:
Open a level in the editor that uses the "brown dungeon" graphics. (Level 16, 17 or 18.)
Open the second dropdown list, and scroll to the bottom. Items F9, FA, FB, FC, FD and FE have blue stripes and some Japanese text.
(Or, download the ZIP attached to this post. Open exp0/21.bmp)
I'd guess they need to be read in order, but I don't speak Japanese, so I don't know.
Together they look like this:

I tried to find the characters in charmap, here is what I could find:
バスエラーガ?生しました
I'm not sure about the first red character (it might also be が or ザ), and I'm totally clueless about the second.
(Kanji just can't fit into 8x8 pixels without becoming unrecognizable. Story texts in the Japanese version use 16x16 characters. (exp0/90.bmp))

Also, on the same level, if you open the third dropdown, tiles 04, 0D and 3D have a Japanese character. (exp0/22.bmp)

It's the same character for all three tiles:

On green levels (levels 13, 14, 15), in the third dropdown, tile 03 has "TR" written on it. (exp0/18.bmp)

An finally, on the princess's room (exp0/71.bmp), if you turn the layer with the front pillars off, in the lower-left corner, you'll see something that looks like the "a" in the Arsys logo.

仕 is "specifications", "vendor" or "supplier" in Japanese.
Konami was the publisher, Arsys Software (one of) the developer(s).
Masaya (NCS) is mentioned as a developer (HTML) and publisher (XLS).
