Haha, looks like I'm finding alternate solutions for a lot of levels (some shorter and some longer)...

In level 3, there's a checkpoint save.
If you die after you've passed the gate, you'll return to the room right after that gate.
Details are here, on pages 5 and 6.
In mods, the room the player returns to can be moved/chosen by the mod's author.
