Mechner's photo; location?

Post by Norbert »

On his Instagram, Mechner posted the attached photo.

I noticed that he has removed the top right portion of the photo.
Perhaps it had a commercial billboard, or something.
Without asking Mechner, we might be able to figure out where this location is.
And then Google Street View might show us the missing portion of the photo.
I've already looked at the photo for quite some time.
Here's what I've found so far.

The biggest clue I could decipher is the top signpost.
It says something along the lines of Escale Batobus Hôtel de Ville.
This means the location is near the Batobus boat stop near Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

The corner may look distinct enough to easily find via Google Maps or even Google Images, but a lot of buildings and corners in Paris look like this.

The café restaurant has "Moules Frites" on the window. This is not the name of the establishment, it's a dish moules-frites.
It says "Glace" and "Sorbe[t]" on the awning (overhang); this is ice and sorbet.
I think maybe on the other window it says "Glaces & Sorbets".

The green building to the left of the restaurant seems to say something like "Demirs & Co".
The right road sign on the building seems to say something like "Rue Jean de Milles", but this is a very rough guess.

Ooh, are we playing Where in the World Is Jordan Mechner? :D

I think I found the place:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Rue+J ... d2.3533091

What helped me is the very hard-to-read street name sign on the wall of the building. The middle word looks very much like "Jean".
So I opened Google Maps and looked up "Escale Batobus Hôtel de Ville".
Then I began to type "Rue Jean". Of the suggestions I clicked the first that continued with a short word: "Rue Jean du Bellay".
I opened the Street View there, and looked around. Only one street corner was really visible from there, and that was what we are looking for!

Nice work!

Maybe his hand was in front of the camera, or some kind of flag(s)/blinds.

Actually "Rue Jean du Bellay" then.
My guess wasn't too far off.
I should've known it was "du" and not (the more Dutch) "de".

Ok. Now when we know his location, do we have a plan to kidnap him and steal his "Prince Of Persia is my intellectual property" certificate?
Somebody with european citizenship should start working at that caffe and put laxatives in his drink. The rest of us can jump him in the toilet and later escape in the direction of that park to the right.

It sounds like you watched too many spy films... :)

Also, I'm not sure if such a certificate even exists and if it does, I don't think people always carry it with themselves. (I don't know much about how these things work...)
