i just rationalize this aspect of the game as part of the magic cast by Jaffar. otherwise, the structure of the game should be something like the Prince starts at, say, 6 levels of dungeon, followed by 6 levels of palace. The shadow at the end of level 6 makes the prince fall down back into the dun...

Note that David has since posted a more permanent workaround to fix the problem.
Change the three popot.org lines in the file ini\mirror_sites.ini that have "http" to "https".

Hm... I suggest changing
"To quick load/save, press F6/F9 in-game."
to
"To quick save/load, press F6/F9 in-game."

Then the before/after matches, plus saving is the logical action before loading.

This is actually my bad, since I originally suggested the currently used line.
